Welcome Class 1
The Class 1 Welcome assembly was a reminder of how special it is for parents and children to take the step from Early Childhood into the big world of Primary School. At the assembly the Class 1 to 6 teachers talked with love and enthusiasm of what their class will discover and enjoy as the year unfolds.
Zara Blagg leads the Class One children from their welcome assembly.
The Class 6 Buddy students formed a Sunflower arch for them.
Italian Straw Hat
We all wish Class 1 the very best. They will graduate Class 12 in …...2036! Along the way there will be many plays. Next week we can enjoy The Italian Straw Hat by Class 9A. Please take the opportunity to enjoy and support the enthusiasm of these 14/15 year olds. Sometimes the audiences are a little sparse so coming along next week for the first play of the year -Thursday or Friday at 6.30pm - a date night? - will mean a lot to the kids and their teachers! Anyone welcome! More details inside.
P&F
The P&F AGM is advertised for tomorrow night (Wed, 26th at 6.30pm in Seekers Place). It’s a chance to be involved and make a difference. Or just check in about what’s happening. Light refreshments available!
Dogs
A reminder that dogs are not allowed on the school site. This is specifically to protect the wildlife from their presence including their scent and to keep everyone (especially little children) feeling safe.
Parking
A reminder that we need to be community minded about parking:
- Please don’t park in areas meant for parents with little ones
- Please don’t park where our neighbours need spaces for their business.
These two issues are a regular source of complaints and we need to be supportive of one another, not individualistic about these things.
Pupil Free Learning
This Friday is a pupil free day for our staff to come together and continue their Professional Development (PD). We are focussing on Working with and Understanding the Will. Bringing the Will into our thinking and feeling and bringing Feeling and Thinking into our Will. How can we be free and authentic in our dialogue with others, in our teaching, if we are lacking the strength of Will to think wisely, deeply and to not follow the herd in our actions? How can we strengthen the Will if we don’t bring clear thinking and depth of feeling to what we are doing. Last PD we discussed Steiner’s subsidiary exercises to enhance control of thought, self discipline, inner balance, positivity and equanimity. This Friday, that work will be extended and deepend. It’s a pleasure to spend time contemplating and working with these concepts.
Developing Together
When we employ staff we are looking for people who are eager to embrace these concepts. Of course all the teachers are registered with the Teacher Registration Board of WA (TRBWA) as a minimum, but then we need to work with flexible thinkers who can bring the Steiner education approach to life. Our Primary Teacher Training course and other intensive courses help with developing staff, as does the Anthroposophy based Pedagogical Studies that we fund for staff to attend weekly, for two years, during school time.
We are in the unique position of being the only Steiner high school in Perth and we take the development of our High School staff seriously so that we meet our obligation of a quality Steiner education experience for our children.
Over many years we have welcomed people with limited experience and seen them flourish. The key ingredients being curiosity, a desire to connect on a human level with the students and colleagues and the ability to bring the curriculum in a way that is engaging and holistic.
Thank you for supporting our staff to have Friday together. Monday is Labour Day and we will see the children back next Tuesday.
With gratitudeBruce Lee

The light rains down. My king, in this late-summer hour;
You reign within my heart as well, with growing power.
You shine with strength. You gleam and glance and glisten.
You lead me into depths where I, within the silence, learn to listen.
And there you form life's fruits, fruits good to eat,
In weaving soul-light warm, where they grow ripe and rich and sweet.

A Creative Build
Last Friday we officially welcomed everyone back to the Primary School year. It was a beautiful moment, and an especially significant one for our new Class Ones, their families and teachers. They were led into the hall by their Class 6 buddies, who made an arch of sunflowers as they left at the end.
The following is a story I shared with everyone.
For weeks over this past summer, I was captivated by an incredible building project. It was some kind of mud brick dwelling. What was unusual about this building is that the owner, architect and the builder were one and the same - a multi-talented individual decked out in Hi-Viz yellow and black.
The skill level of this individual was amazing – creating an intricate shape, adorned with all sorts of organic patterns.
I was intrigued by the unusual structure. And every day saw it growing and growing. One day when the worker was busy building, I went up to take a closer look. And I had to get in close because the amazing thing is that the talented worker was no bigger than my thumb!
It was a female mud dauber wasp. And I could see she had been building something special. It wasn’t a home for her; it was a home for her babies. A nursery, in fact, with many small rooms and in every room, she laid a tiny egg. Architect... builder... and mother! She left some tasty food in each little room and closed the door of the room with mud. Over and over, she did this until the nursery was complete.
One day she left and never came back. Her job was done. That’s how it sometimes is in the world of nature. There followed many days of stillness and no movement...on the outside, at least. Inside, the little eggs were hatching, growing, feeding and changing their shapes.
One day I saw two perfectly made round holes on the side of the nursery. Two rooms of that little nursery were empty. Then on another day 2 more holes below that, and each day some more until there were 19 holes in all. 19 holes; 19 empty rooms. The little babies were leaving their homes as young wasps; ready to go out and eat nectar from the blossoms and pollinate the flowers.
I thought about that worker, that mother. I admired her hard work, her creativity, her care and planning, her fierceness if I came too close! And I admired her sacrifice- for she would never see her children, she would be long gone but they would know her love and what she had created for them. And her children would grow and become independent, taking their first flights in the world.
We are so privileged to be living and working on this beautiful boodja where small wonders like this are happening every single day.
I wish you all a wonderful year at PWS.

Class 11/12 Astronomy: Astrophotography 101
Students in the Class 11/12 Astronomy elective have been visited by SPIRIT program coordinator Tim Young. During this time, the students have learnt how to use the robotic telescopes and created stunning images of objects from the night sky.
The SPIRIT program is part of the education and outreach done by the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), in WA. It has four fully robotic telescopes that are used for education and research. Stationed in Mardella, south of Perth, the observatory offers students the opportunity to have hands-on involvement with astronomy and learn about the science that can be done. You can see three of the telescopes in the image below, including the newest telescope, a 1m reflector.
Across the two weeks, students have planned what objects they want to image and used the online interface with the telescopes to schedule their observing. After taking the observations through a range of colour filters, they used software to turn the black-and-white images into stunning colour images.

Students will continue to work with the SPIRIT telescopes to continue taking better and more breathtaking images, then explore the science that can be conducted with the telescopes.
