Band Night
Parkerville Steiner College students will be performing on this Friday night. The evening promises to be a wonderful community gathering. A Thai food van will be available. Bring your picnic blankets and enjoy a night under the stars!
Last week at Parkerville Steiner College and today at Perth Waldorf School there are school tours. Interest in Steiner Education continues to grow and we are blessed to be able to provide a robust and nurturing education and authentically say we are child focussed. It is a wonderful privilege.
Weekly we can see that the school offers a thriving and lively curriculum, supported by:
- dedicated teachers and assistants who revere the children and want the best for them.
- parents and carers who offer warmth, guidance and love.
This love and care was never more evident than in the enormous enveloping of support our Class 12 students received as they presented their Projects last week. The young adults acknowledged that, again and again, by thanking school staff and giving thanks for their own supportive families. It is lovely that such gratitude has been fostered.
"Receive the children in reverence, educate them in love, and send them forth in freedom."

This quote sums up what we are doing and why. We emphasise the importance of approaching children with respect; of fostering a loving and caring educational environment, and ultimately empowering them to be free and independent thinkers.
Movie Night
Parkerville Steiner College and Perth Waldorf School are hosting a screening of “the last daughter” at the outdoor cinema at Murdoch University. It is for anyone in Class 7 and above. This movie is focussed on developing our dialogue and understanding with First Nations people and is highly rated. Lets see lots of people on rugs for the outdoor screening at Murdoch. Thank you to the community support team for organising this fun activity.
Software - Leaving the MAZE to be more SENTRAL
- The school is installing new management software. It's a big upgrade from the 20 year old MAZE software we have had a love-hate relationship with. It is called SENTRAL. It’s a big learning curve for our staff but soon enough we will all be using it with aplomb.
Annualisation
- The School Council have resolved to provide annualised billing from 2024 onwards. This is connected to leaving the MAZE. Annualised billing means that at the start of the year a single figure can be given of what the fees and charges are for the whole year. We have not been able to easily provide this in the past and we hope it will be helpful. More details and ways of paying will be provided as we enter the new year.
Fees
- A friendly reminder that school fees are now overdue (unless you have a payment plan). Please help by paying promptly and keeping our costs for debt recovery really low. Speak to us before debt mounts so we can look at payment options and we can work in a collaborative way.

Parkerville Campus (Class 7-8)
Fun Orientation Day for our incoming Class 7 Students
Last Friday, our incoming 2024 Class 7 students joined us for a day of fun and activities at Parkerville Steiner College. The day began with a number of hilarious ice breaker games and lots of laughs.
The students then toured the high school; visiting the classrooms, the art and craft room, the woodwork space, the library and the music room, where they watched lessons in practice and were treated to a musical performance. They then took part in a number of interactive high school activities, including a hands-on science experiment, where they learnt how to skewer a balloon without popping it, followed by an artistic workshop, where they carved nature inspired designs onto a bar of soap.
Full of questions and enthusiasm, the students truly embraced their introduction to high school life at Parkerville Steiner College. We are very much looking forward to welcoming them to the campus in 2024.
Indigenous society in the Fitzroy Valley
Class 7 has begun Term 4 with a Main Lesson that focused on the Indigenous Societies of the Central Kimberley region in Western Australia. This Main Lesson offered an opportunity for our students to not only learn about the historical and contemporary lives of the five core language groups of this fascinating region, but also to engage in a unique observational and reflective activity known as "sit spot" journaling.
The Central Kimberley region is home to several Indigenous language groups, each with its own rich history, culture, and traditions. The students embarked on a journey to explore these diverse tribes, including the Bunuba, Walmajarri, Nyikina, Wangkatjungka and Gooniyandi people.
This Main Lesson is intended to enable students to gain a deeper understanding of the intricate relationships between language, culture, and identity. They discovered the interwoven aspects of surface and deep culture, such as how the Kinship system and Totem animal responsibility contributes to the connectedness of Aboriginal people to their country and the natural world. One of the integral aspects of this Main Lesson was the daily sit spot journaling activity, a practice intended to inspire deep observation, meditative rest, and connection with nature.
Every morning, the students spent silent time in a chosen spot; in, under or close to the trees to the south of our classrooms. They were encouraged to observe closely, listen attentively, and engage all their senses to connect with their natural surroundings. Following this, they recorded their observations, insights, and reflections in their nature journals, using both writing and drawing.
This simple yet profound activity provided our students with a space for solitude, reflection, and deep connection with the natural world. It also allowed them to integrate their experiences and understanding of the Indigenous societies into a personal context.
The nature journal pages are filling with beautiful sketches of flora and fauna, thoughtful reflections, and even some poetry inspired by the natural world. They are a testament to the students' growing appreciation of the Indigenous way of relating to nature and their ability to express this understanding creatively.
The Class 7 students have demonstrated curiosity, dedication, and a growing respect for the Indigenous cultures and languages of the Central Kimberley region. It is intended that this Main Lesson has not only contributed to their educational development, but also nurtured their capacities for empathy, respect, and environmental stewardship.

Pi and Pythagoras - Adventures in Mathematics
Across the first three weeks of the final term this year, the Class 8 students journeyed through thousands of years' worth of mathematical discoveries, queries, and quandaries. Using only a piece of string and a ruler, they discovered the ratio of Pi within every circular object they could find both within and outside of the classroom, while many let their creativity shine in how they represented cycles of the world in a circular diagram.
In the second half of the Main Lesson, they received more than the recommended morning amount of sugar, as we discovered the theorem of Pythagoras through arranging 9, 16, and 25 different coloured skittles into the squares which connect to form a right-angled triangle. I also learnt a lesson from this, which is to save such discoveries for the end of a class with a group of teenagers. I had a wonderful time teaching these incredible young people, and I hope to see them all continue to flourish and grow, within mathematics and the rest of their high school journey!

Art Main Lessons
Art Main Lessons begin formally in Class 8, where the students discover the early art of humanity from Palaeolithic through to Ancient Egyptian. In Class 9 we look at Ancient Greece through to the Renaissance and in 10, the Baroque period through to Modern Art. The Class 11 Main Lesson focuses on Australian Art and Indigenous Australian art. In Class 12 the students do the History of Architecture, where they design and build an architectural model of their dream home.
The Art Main Lessons are like a window into the development of humanity and the essence of the many rich cultures that humanity has given birth to over the epochs. As John Ruskin, the famous 19th century art critic said: “Great nations write their autobiographies in three manuscripts, the book of their deeds, the book of their words and the book of their art. Not one of these books can be understood unless we read the two others, but of the three the only trustworthy one is the last”.

Class 10 Geography Main Lesson - The Earth in Movement
Our Class 10 students were presented with the opportunity to learn more about the ocean and wind systems and the connection between the two. We discussed our daily habits and our attitudes towards the environment, recycling and waste. One topic discussed was the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (which is approximately 1,600,000 square kilometres in size – roughly the size of Queensland) where a lot of our plastic waste is ending up. After exploring what is happening and why the plastic is staying stationary (due to the North Pacific gyre – a large system of circulating ocean surface currents), students were asked to create some ‘plastic art’ using their own recycling or waste products. The results for class 10 were great and I was once again impressed by the creativity of our students. Please see some of the art below.

Class 12 Project Presentations

We had an extraordinary week watching our Class 12 students present their final Project component to the community. Initiative, love for the world, and knowledge has given our Class 12 students voices authenticity. Not only did they leave their community enlivened and uplifted by their wholehearted striving but knowing that these young adults are stepping into the world fills us with a sense of optimism and hope in our shared future. Preparing our students for their future lives is a key intention of the Projects - this has been our task. Our hearts are filled with hope as we witnessed their discernment, creativity, and goodness. These are the qualities needed to live wholly and enact change in this world.
Thank you, Class 12, for being who you are and for everything you have shared this week.
